Manchester City continued their relentless pursuit of Premier League glory with a good 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium tonight.
The victory, fueled by a masterclass from Phil Foden, moves Pep Guardiola’s side within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal, ensuring the title race will stretch into the final week of the season.
​With the pressure of the chasing pack weighing heavy, City knew that anything less than three points would likely hand the trophy to North London.
However, despite making six changes to the starting lineup with one eye on this weekend’s FA Cup final against Chelsea, the reigning champions never looked like stumbling.
The narrative of the first half was dictated by Phil Foden. Making a rare start in a season where he has often been rotated, the England international appeared determined to prove he remains the heartbeat of this City side.
His first major contribution came in the 32nd minute. Foden received the ball on the edge of the area and, with a sublime back-heel, threaded a pass through two defenders into the path of Antoine Semenyo.
The Ghanaian forward made no mistake, slotting a composed finish into the bottom-left corner to break the deadlock and made things 1-0.
​Foden wasn’t finished, as eight minutes later, he turned provider again. A searching cross into the box was cushioned by Foden’s delicate first touch directly into the path of Omar Marmoush.
The Egyptian striker, continuing his fine run of form, struck the ball on the turn, rifling it into the far corner past a helpless Dean Henderson.
The 2-0 cushion at halftime reflected a half where City enjoyed nearly 70% possession and total territorial dominance.
Crystal Palace, currently sitting 14th and safe from the threat of relegation, showed flashes of quality in the second half.
Manager Oliver Glasner introduced Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr to inject some energy, and for a 20-minute spell, the Eagles threatened to make things uncomfortable.
Sarr drew a smart save from City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Daichi Kamada was later booked for simulation in the box as Palace searched for a lifeline.
​However, City’s defensive duo of Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guéhi remained resolute, snuffing out any genuine danger.
As the game entered its closing stages, the Etihad erupted again. In the 84th minute, substitute Rayan Cherki drove forward and released Savinho with a perfectly weighted pass.
The Brazilian winger, who had been a constant menace on the flank, cut inside and hammered a left-footed shot into the back of the net to seal the 3-0 result.
Manchester City made sure they got the important win 3-0 against Crystal Palace which narrow down the gap between them and Arsenal to just two.
For Pep Guardiola, the focus now shifts briefly away from the league as City prepare to face Chelsea at Wembley this Saturday.
The pursuit of a domestic double remains alive, but the Premier League remains the ultimate prize.
​Arsenal face a relegated Burnley on Monday. If the Gunners win, City must then travel to Bournemouth on May 19 and secure a victory to take the fight to the final day.
If City slip up in their fixture against Bournemouth, Arsenal will be crowned champions for the first time in 22 years.
