Knicks Dominate 76ers as Timberwolves Edge Spurs in Thrilling Playoff Openers

New York Knicks made a powerful statement in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semi-final series, dismantling the Philadelphia 76ers 137-98 in a one-sided contest at Madison Square Garden.

At the heart of the victory was Jalen Brunson, who delivered a superb 35-point performance to lead a relentless Knicks offense. From the opening tip, New York imposed themselves on the game, combining high-tempo play with clinical shooting to overwhelm a Philadelphia side that had entered the series full of confidence after eliminating Boston in the first round.

Brunson set the tone early, pouring in 14 first-quarter points as the Knicks surged into a quick lead. By halftime, the home side had racked up 74 points, taking a commanding 74-51 advantage into the break. A deep three-pointer from Brunson late in the second quarter capped off a near-flawless offensive display that left the Sixers with little room to recover.

The Knicks’ dominance was not limited to one man. OG Anunoby added 18 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges chipped in with 17 points each, underlining the team’s depth. New York’s defensive intensity also proved decisive, as they neutralised Philadelphia’s key threats and forced difficult shooting opportunities throughout the game.

For the Sixers, it was a frustrating night. Their star trio of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George struggled to find rhythm, combining for just 12-of-31 shooting. The lack of offensive cohesion and inability to respond to New York’s early surge ultimately sealed their fate as the Knicks cruised to a comfortable victory.

The result gives New York a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series and provides a major confidence boost as they aim to reach their first NBA Finals since 1999. Game 2, also at Madison Square Garden, now offers the Knicks a chance to tighten their grip before the series shifts to Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, the Minnesota Timberwolves secured a dramatic 104-102 win over the San Antonio Spurs, overcoming a historic defensive performance from Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama, recently named Defensive Player of the Year, delivered a remarkable display with 12 blocks, a new postseason record, along with 15 rebounds and 11 points. Despite his dominance on the defensive end, San Antonio were unable to convert their chances when it mattered most.

Minnesota showed resilience throughout the contest, with Anthony Edwards making a crucial return from injury. Coming off the bench, Edwards contributed 18 points despite not being at full fitness, providing energy and leadership at key moments. Julius Randle led the Timberwolves in scoring with 21 points, while several teammates also stepped up to ensure a balanced offensive effort.

The game remained tightly contested down the stretch, with neither side able to establish clear control. In the closing seconds, San Antonio had a chance to snatch victory, but a last-gasp buzzer-beater attempt bounced off the rim, allowing Minnesota to escape with a crucial road win and seize a 1-0 series lead.

After the game, Edwards emphasised the team’s collective mentality, insisting their focus remains solely on winning, regardless of circumstances. Wembanyama, meanwhile, acknowledged that improvements would be needed, particularly offensively, as the Spurs look to respond in Game 2.

With both series now underway, the early results have provided a glimpse of what promises to be an intense playoff battle. The Knicks have laid down a marker in the East with a dominant performance, while the Timberwolves have shown their ability to grind out results under pressure. As the postseason progresses, all eyes will be on how these teams adjust, respond, and build momentum in their pursuit of an NBA Finals.
