Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the winner as Crystal Palace claimed first European title after beating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to lift the UEFA Conference League for the 2025/26 season.

The Premier League side got the job done by adding another major title to their trophy room in The Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.

The atmosphere in Leipzig was perfect, as thousands of traveling Palace supporters descended upon Germany to witness their team’s first-ever continental final.

For manager Oliver Glasner, the stakes could not have been higher. Having already delivered the FA Cup to Selhurst Park last season, the Austrian tactician entered this fixture knowing it would be his final match in charge of the club.

The match began as a cagey affair, with both sides clearly feeling the weight of the occasion. Rayo Vallecano, competing in their first-ever European final, looked to control the tempo through their organized defensive structure.

However, Crystal Palace utilized the pace of their wingers to threaten on the break, but there was nothing happening for them until the first half ended.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 51st minute. Following a sustained period of pressure from the English side, midfielder Adam Wharton unleashed a stinging long-range effort that forced a save from Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla.

The ball spilled loose into the danger zone, and Mateta, displaying his trademark predatory instinct, was the first to react.

He rifled the rebound into the back of the net, sending the Palace end into delirium as things became 1-0 between both teams.

Following the goal, Rayo Vallecano intensified their search for an equalizer, forcing Palace to dig deep.

The Eagles’ defensive unit, led by Maxence Lacroix and Chadi Riad, remained resolute under pressure. Despite Rayo enjoying 59 percentage of the possession and attempting to break down a low block, the Spanish side struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.

Dean Henderson, though rarely forced into spectacular action, commanded his area with authority, ensuring the clean sheet remained intact through the final whistle.

As the clock ticked into the final minutes, the tension at the Red Bull Arena was palpable. Rayo grew increasingly desperate, leading to a flurry of late yellow cards as their frustration mounted.

However, Crystal Palace’s tactical discipline held firm until the referee signaled the end of the match which handed them a 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano to win the UEFA Conference League.

The final whistle sparked scenes of pure jubilation. For the players and the fans, this trophy represents the culmination of a transformative period for Crystal Palace.

Over the past two seasons, the club has evolved from a mid-table Premier League side into a team capable of competing with and defeating the best on the continent.

For Oliver Glasner, the victory is the crowning achievement of his tenure. He departs Selhurst Park having secured two major trophies in just two full seasons, forever cementing his legacy as the most successful manager in the club’s history.

As the players lifted the trophy toward the Leipzig night sky, the message was clear that, Crystal Palace has arrived on the European stage.

The victory not only secures their place in next season’s UEFA Europa League but also provides a monumental boost to the Premier League’s collective stature in Europe.

The victory for Crystal Palace against Rayo Vallecano is a defining moment for the club history as they yet again add a major title to their trophy room under Glasner.
