Gianluca Prestianni has been handed a six-match suspension by UEFA following homophobic conduct during Benfica’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid, MySportDab Reports.
The incident occurred during the February knockout play-off at the Estadio da Luz, where the game was temporarily halted after Vinicius Junior accused Prestianni of abuse. While initial claims pointed toward alleged racist remarks, the Argentine winger denied those accusations, insisting his words were misinterpreted.
However, further clarification emerged through Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who stated that Prestianni admitted to making a homophobic comment instead.
UEFA’s investigation ultimately led to a six-match ban, with half of the suspension deferred for two years. The 20-year-old had already served a provisional one-match ban.
UEFA has also requested that FIFA extend the sanction worldwide, a move that could impact Prestianni’s eligibility across all competitions.
The controversy overshadowed the match, which saw Vinicius give Real Madrid the lead before reporting the incident to referee Francois Letexier. The official responded by making the anti-racism gesture introduced in 2024, prompting Vinicius and his teammates to briefly leave the pitch.
After the game, Vinicius condemned the abuse on social media, stating that “racists are, above all, cowards,” as the situation drew global attention.
Benfica initially backed their player, describing the situation as a “defamation campaign,” while manager Jose Mourinho warned that severe consequences would follow if wrongdoing was confirmed.
The case has reignited debate around discrimination in football, particularly regarding the disparity in punishments. While racist abuse carries a minimum 10-match ban, homophobic conduct has historically resulted in lighter sanctions, raising questions about consistency in enforcement.
Attention has also shifted to preventive measures, with Gianni Infantino advocating for stricter punishment against players who cover their mouths during confrontations. Football lawmakers at IFAB are now reviewing potential rule changes to address the issue.
For Prestianni, the ban could have wider implications beyond club football. Although he recently made his international debut for Argentina, the suspension may hinder his chances of being considered for upcoming major tournaments.
