Neymar has admitted he could retire at the end of the year, raising fresh uncertainty over his involvement in Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, MySportDab Reports.
The 34-year-old striker, whose £200 million move from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 remains the highest transfer fee in football history, has struggled with persistent injuries in recent seasons.
After leaving Al Hilal SFC, Neymar returned to boyhood side Santos FC in January 2025 and later extended his contract until the end of 2026.
His comeback, however, has been far from smooth. Following knee surgery in December, Neymar missed the start of the Brazilian season and only returned to action last week. Speaking to Brazilian outlet Caze, he acknowledged that his future remains uncertain.
“I don’t know what will happen from now on, I don’t know about next year,” Neymar said. “It may be that when December comes, I’ll want to retire. I’m living year to year now.”
Despite those doubts, the forward is determined to fight for a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad. Neymar is the Seleção’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, overtaking the legendary Pelé. However, he has not represented the national team since October 2023.
Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has made clear that only fully fit players will be considered for the tournament.
Former Brazil midfielder Kleberson believes Neymar’s unique ability still sets him apart, insisting that even without peak fitness, his presence could be decisive.
Brazil begin their Group C campaign against Morocco on June 13, followed by fixtures against Haiti and Scotland, as Neymar battles both time and fitness to extend his international career.
