Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has been fined by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and is under formal investigation after posting videos on social media that football authorities say promote sexist stereotypes and violate gender equality principles, MySportDab Reports.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday by the FMF, Liga MX, and Liga MX Femenil, officials condemned Hernandez’s recent comments on TikTok, saying they amounted to “media violence” and went against the sport’s gender and diversity policies.
The FMF confirmed that a financial penalty and an official warning have been issued, with further disciplinary measures possible if the behavior is repeated.
The 37-year-old striker, who rejoined Chivas Guadalajara in January 2024, came under fire after urging women to “let themselves be guided by a man” and accusing them of “eradicating masculinity.” He also labeled society as “hypersensitive” and criticized feminist views on domestic roles.
The remarks sparked widespread criticism from fans, public figures, and institutions, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. “He’s a very good footballer, but in terms of his opinion about women, I think he still has a lot to learn,” she said during her daily news conference.
Chivas also issued a statement distancing themselves from Hernandez’s comments, affirming their rejection of any expression that reinforces harmful gender stereotypes. “The club has taken the appropriate measures in accordance with its internal regulations,” it said.
The FMF’s Gender and Diversity Commission stated that it is committed to promoting equality in sport and will not tolerate conduct that undermines that mission.
Hernandez, Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, previously played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, West Ham, and LA Galaxy. His representatives have yet to respond to the controversy.
