Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has spoken publicly for the first time after surviving a life-threatening injury that left him in a medically induced coma, MySportDab Reports.
The 27-year-old suffered a ruptured intestine during a Premier League clash against Leicester City following a heavy collision with the goalpost.
Though Awoniyi initially attempted to continue playing, he was later rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.
Doctors placed him in a coma to stabilise his condition, and while he is now awake and on the road to recovery, he is not expected to return to action this season.
In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Awoniyi expressed deep gratitude to God, Nottingham Forest, and fans around the world for their support during what he described as “one of the hardest” periods of his career.
“By God’s grace, I’m still here, still smiling, and still fighting,” Awoniyi wrote. “Thank you to my teammates, coaches, staff, and the Forest family. Your visits and support lifted my spirits more than I can explain.”
The Nigerian international also thanked fans at home and abroad for their prayers and encouragement, saying he draws strength from their messages as he recovers.
Awoniyi concluded by wishing his Forest teammates success in the final matches of the season and expressed hope to return stronger. His absence is a blow to both club and country, but his recovery is being met with relief and widespread support.
