Remo Stars have etched their name in Nigerian football history by clinching their maiden Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, ending years of near-misses, MySportDab reports.
The Sky Blue Stars sealed the historic triumph with three games to spare following a narrow 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on Sunday in Ikenne.
Lekan Adedayo’s decisive 84th-minute strike proved enough to secure all three points and push Remo Stars to an unassailable 68 points from 35 matches, 10 ahead of second-placed Rivers United.
This marks the first time a privately owned club has lifted the NPFL title since Ocean Boys achieved the feat in 2006, making Remo Stars the 11th such team in Nigerian league history.
Other private clubs to have won the title include Mighty Jets, Racca Rovers, Leventis United, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Julius Berger, BCC Lions, Udoji United, Stationery Stores, New Nigeria Bank, and Ocean Boys.
Coach Daniel Ogunmodede admitted the pressure was immense during the title-clinching match. “We were tense. We knew what was at stake,” he told Premium Times. “We missed a couple of early chances because of that tension, but the boys showed resilience. Tornadoes made it very difficult.”
In dethroning Enugu Rangers, Remo Stars not only claimed the domestic crown but also secured qualification for the 2025 CAF Champions League.
They’ll now aim to follow in the footsteps of Enyimba and make their mark on the continental stage.
With matches remaining against El Kanemi Warriors, Ikorodu City, and Bayelsa United, Remo Stars will look to end the season on a high note before lifting the NPFL trophy on May 25.
