Manchester City have extended IIkay Gundogan’s contract, MySportDab reports.
After a botched second season with Barcelona in La Liga, Gundogan returned to Manchester City last summer and has since gelled back seamlessly into Pep Guardiola’s team.
The German midfield sensation was among Pep Guardiola’s first signing into Manchester City in 2016 and has enjoyed a special relationship with the Spaniard.
Nearing the twilights of his career, Gundogan has obviously lost the spark of his youth but his crucial contributions to Pep Guardiola’s midfield nomenclature are not in doubt.
Since returning from Barcelona, he has tallied 28 Premier League appearances, providing four assists. He also made 10 Champions League appearances, scoring two goals.
Meanwhile, he had signed a one-year contract with the club with a one-year extension clause attached to the deal.
With the clock ticking on his current deal, it was thought City may part ways with him at the end of the summer.
Now, it has been confirmed that the club have decided to trigger the extension clause on the deal and retain him for one more season till 2026.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the extension of the player’s contract in a recent interview.
“Gündo has one more year contract, definitely. What’s going to happen in the summer I don’t know, but he has one more year contract now,” he said as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
Gundogan won every club trophy available with Manchester City before the ill-fated move to Barcelona. He has tallied 347 appearances for the club, scoring 62 goals, and providing 41 assists.
The 34-year-old will hope to maintain his recent stellar showing for the club as he commits to a new one-year deal.
