Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been dropped from the team’s travelling squad for the Premier League match against Newcastle United today, MySportDab reports.
After drawing 2-2 against French side Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg in France, United returns to domestic action today to face Newcastle United in the Premier League.
According to report reaching us from close sources, Andre Onana has been axed out of the traveling squad for the Newcastle United match.
It is the first time the Cameroonian goalie will be absent in between the sticks for United despite being available for action.
The decision to drop him from the squad is not a surprise following what passed as his worst outing for the team against Lyon in midweek.
United conceded two goals in the match – both of which were attributed to his erroneous and uncomposed posturing in goal. The first goal, which gave Lyon the lead, came through a simple and distant free-kick that is believed shouldn’t have beat his agility.
The second goal, a late equalizer in the final minutes, saw him callously leaving the ball for the opposition to tuck in from close range.
After the game, United head Ruben Amorim appeared to shield him from criticisms, insisting it was a team match, not an individual game.
However, sources close to the dressing room revealed the Portuguese wasn’t overly impressed with his (Onana’s performance) and was open to replacing him with United second-choice Altay Bayindir.
Now, it has been confirmed that he has axed him from the squad against Newcastle United with second-choice Altay Bayindir taking his place.
Notably, it hasn’t been a largely disappointing campaign for Onana with Manchester United. He boasts some moments of brilliance and prolific goalkeeping.
However, recent blunders and avoidable errors has thrust him into the spotlight, overshadowing patches of his heroic performances.
