Didier Drogba Defends Jose Mourinho Amid Racism Allegations

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has publicly defended his former manager, Jose Mourinho, after the Fenerbahce boss was accused of making racist remarks during the Turkish Super Lig derby against Galatasaray, MySportDab Reports.

The controversy erupted after Monday’s goalless draw when Mourinho commented that the home bench was “jumping like monkeys.” Galatasaray swiftly condemned the remarks, accusing the Portuguese tactician of making “racist statements.”

Drogba, who played for Galatasaray in the 2013-14 season and scored 20 goals in 53 appearances, rejected the accusations. The Ivorian striker, who won multiple titles under Mourinho at Chelsea, took to X to defend his former boss.

“I’ve known Jose for 25 years, and he is not a racist. Trust me. History proves it,” Drogba wrote. He also reaffirmed his deep connection with Galatasaray, stating, “You know how proud I was to wear the yellow and red jersey and my love for the most decorated club in Turkey! We all know how passionate and heated rivalries can be, and I’ve been lucky enough to experience it.”

Drogba concluded his statement by dismissing the allegations: “How can my ‘Dad’ be a racist? Come on, guys.”

Mourinho, who took over Fenerbahce in June 2024 after leaving Roma, has been under increased scrutiny since the incident.

Ahead of the derby, he had already stirred controversy by criticizing Turkish referees, calling it a “disaster” to appoint a local official for the game. As a result, both clubs agreed to have Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic officiate the match.

Sources close to Mourinho claim the Portuguese coach is deeply frustrated by the accusations and is considering legal action to clear his name. His supporters also highlight his history of working with black players and his strong relationships with them, refuting any notion of racism.

However, Galatasaray board member Can Natan denounced Mourinho’s remarks, calling them “insulting” and indicative of “a pattern of troubling behavior.” He stressed that influential figures in football must set an example and that such comments “foster division.”

Fenerbahce, meanwhile, dismissed the allegations, insisting Mourinho’s words had been taken “completely out of context” and denying any racist intent.
