FIFA has unveiled the shortlist of nominees for the 2024 The Best FIFA Football Awards, recognizing the standout performers in men’s and women’s football over the past year, MySportDab Reports.

Among the nominees for the Best FIFA Men’s XI are Nigerian stars Ademola Lookman and William Troost-Ekong, a testament to their exceptional contributions to club and country in 2024.

Lookman earned a nomination in the attackers’ category following a remarkable year for Atalanta. His hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen secured a 3-0 victory, making him a global sensation.

Meanwhile, Troost-Ekong, shortlisted among the best defenders, displayed exemplary leadership by captaining Nigeria to the AFCON final.

Though the Super Eagles fell 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Troost-Ekong’s performances throughout the tournament earned him the MVP award.

This year’s voting for the FIFA Best XI introduces a new format, allowing fans to have a say alongside an expert panel.

Fans can select their ideal XI from a pool of 77 nominees, including 22 defenders, midfielders, and forwards each, along with 11 goalkeepers, and slot them into preset tactical formations. Votes are open on FIFA.com until 23:59 CET on December 10, 2024.

Lookman and Troost-Ekong’s nominations underline their stellar seasons, reflecting Nigeria’s growing impact on the global football stage. Both players have set an example for emerging talents, solidifying their places among the elite in the sport.
