The first edition of the Premier League Summer Series was in 2023. In the United States of America, it was organized by the Premier League, and it’s a friendly pre-season tournament, as we all know.

Historical background

The first edition of the Premier League Summer Series started on the 22nd of July 2023. The tournament had been initially announced in April by Richard Masters, the Premier League chief executive. It went on from July 22nd to 30th.

It took place in the stadiums of five host cities on the East Coast by six premier league clubs.

The six teams that participated are listed below:

Chelsea
Fulham
Newcastle United
Aston Villa
Brighton & Hove Albion
Brentford

Tournament Details

Tournament Details

The total number of matches played was nine, and thirty-five goals were scored. Without having to play against the same opponent more than once, each club played three games during the tournament.

The overall attendance that graced the competitions was four hundred and twenty-two thousand, two hundred and forty-four (422, 244) with a total of forty-six thousand, nine hundred and sixteen (46, 916) per match.

For a win, it’s three points, one point for a draw, and zero for a loss. Suppose after the matches, several teams have the same points; their position can be determined by using their standings on the table.

It can be the number of goals scored, the higher goal difference, and the results of head-to-head matches. The club with the most points at the end of the tournament emerged as the winner.

Elliot Anderson was the top scorer with a total of three goals. The champions of the tournament were the Chelsea club, who won three matches with one draw and two wins.

Venues

Below are the five stadiums used for the tournament.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. It has a total capacity of seventy-one thousand (71,000).

Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has a total capacity of seventy-one thousand, eight hundred and ninety-six (71,896).

FedExField in Summerfield, Maryland. It has a total capacity of sixty-seven thousand, six hundred and seventeen (67,617).

Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. It has a total capacity of twenty-five thousand (25,000).

Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida, which also has a total capacity of twenty-five thousand (25,000).

Matches

The tournament took place between July 22nd and July 30th, with Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion being the first set of teams to start the game.

Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion

The first match was by 7 p.m. on July 22nd, 2023. The match attendance was 65, 128. The stadium used was Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, and Robert Jones was the referee of the match.

The match was Chelsea Vs Brighton, with four to three being their respective goal scores.

The players who bagged four goals for Chelsea are:

Christopher Nkunku in 19 minutes

Mykhailo Mudryk in 65 minutes

Conor Gallagher in 72 minutes

Nicholas Jackson in 76 minutes

The players who scored three goals for Brighton & Hove Albion FC are:

Danny Welbeck in 13 minutes

João Pedro in 79 minutes

Deniz Undav in 89 minutes

Fulham and Brentford 

The second match was also at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia by 4 p.m. on July 23rd, 2023. The referee was Peter Bankes, and the total attendance was 40, 332.

The goal scores between Fulham and Brentford were three to two, respectively.

The players who scored for Fulham are:

Harry Wilson scored just 3 minutes into the match.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid in 36 minutes
Carlos Vinicius in 47 minutes

The two players who scored for Brentford are;

Yoane Wissa retaliated in 7 minutes, getting Brentford in a draw with Fulham.

In 48 minutes, Kristoffer Ajer also scored.

Newcastle United and Aston Villa 

The third match also took place on Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on July 23rd, 2023, by 7 p.m.

Attendance was 40, 230, with the match referee being Lukasz Szpala. The two clubs ended the match in a draw with three goals each.

The players who scored for Newcastle United are:

Elliot Anderson at 28 minutes

Alexander Isak at 47 minutes

Callum Wilson at 55 minutes

The players who scored for Aston Villa are;

Ollie Watkins scored in just 7 minutes into the game.

Emi Buendia followed up with another goal in 11 minutes and yet another one in 48 minutes.

The Three Matches on July 26th, 2023.

Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion

By 5:30 pm at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Brighton & Hove Albion beat Brentford in the match with two goals.

The two goals were scored solely by Simon Adingra at 19 and 58 minutes into the game. Total attendance was estimated to be 70,789. Guido Gonzales Jr. was the referee.

Fulham and Aston Villa

At Exploria Stadium in Orlando by 7 p.m., Aston Villa came out victorious in the match against Fulham by winning with two goals to nothing.

The goals were scored by Jaden Philogene in 40 minutes and Moussa Diaby in 73 minutes. Robert Jones was the referee, and the attendance of the match was 16,134.

Newcastle United and Chelsea

The two clubs went home with a draw of one after playing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta around 8:15 p.m. The attendance was 70,789,  with the match referee being Peter Bankes.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United

On July 28th, by 7:30 pm at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, Newcastle United won Brighton & Hove Albion by two goals to one.

These two clubs played against each other, putting in their best, but Newcastle United ended the struggles by scoring another goal a few minutes before the end of the game.

Welbeck scored for Brighton in 49 minutes, while Elliot Anderson scored two goals for Newcastle United in 86 and 92 minutes. Attendance was around 26,150,  and the match referee was Sergil Demianchuk.

The Last Two Matches on July 30th, 2023

Aston Villa and Brentford

By noon on FedExField in Summerfield, the two teams scored a total of three goals, each resulting in a draw.

The players that scored for Aston Villa were Konsa, Daiby, and Cash in 27, 32, and 37 minutes, respectively.

Brentford players that scored were Mbeumo, Dasilva, and Baptiste in 9, 22, and 66 minutes, respectively. Match attendance was 46, 346 and Peter Bankes was the referee.

Chelsea and Fulham

By 2:45 pm in the same stadium, Chelsea beat Fulham with two goals to nothing. Thiago Silva and Nkunku are the players who scored for Chelsea in 20 and 41 minutes, respectively. Robert Jones was the referee, and attendance was also 46, 346.

Conclusion

The 2023 Premier League Summer Series held across five United States cities between six Premier League teams ended with Chelsea emerging as the winner.

With a total of two wins and one draw in three matches, Chelsea was crowned champion of the tournament and the 2023 Premier League Summer Series winner.
