Luke Shaw has blamed Manchester United for an injury-ravaged 2023-24 campaign with the club, MySportDab reports.
The 28-year-old fortunately made England’s Euro 2024 squad despite an injury-hit campaign with the Red Devils.
Speaking after making Gareth Southgate’s 26-man list, Shaw said he blamed himself and Manchester United as well for the injury. According to him, he can’t resist the manager’s call for him to play when the medical team have cleared him of fitness issues.
“It’s kind of everyone’s fault. Partly my fault, partly medical staff. I think everyone would admit that.
“There wasn’t too much on the scan. I didn’t train all week, then trained the day before the game.
“If the manager asks me to play, I’m never going to say no. But I shouldn’t have played.”
Luke Shaw played his last match for Manchester United on February 18 and picked up a fresh muscle injury just a few days after he returned from the sidelines.
The fresh injury blow raised questions over Manchester United’s injury management with reports the 28-year-old was called back to action too soon before he could recover fully – a position Shaw stressed further in his comment.
The highly-rated defender was grounded with injury three times in the just-concluded 2023-24 campaign. He missed a total of 39 matches across the three injury layoffs.
After making Gareth Southgate’s 33-man training ground list for the 2024 Euros, Shaw luckily scaled through to the final 26-man list despite his injury setback.
He is expected to miss England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia but will race against time to be available for the next two group matches against Denmark and Slovenia.
