Gernot Rohr Warns of “Shameful” Consequences if Nigeria Fails to Qualify for 2026 WC

Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s sluggish start in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, warning that failing to qualify for a second consecutive tournament would be “shameful” for the footballing powerhouse, MySportDab.

Rohr’s cautionary remarks come in the wake of Nigeria’s lackluster performance in Group C, where they have only managed three draws and one defeat in their opening four matches.

Rohr, who recently guided the Benin Republic to a 2-1 victory over his former team, expressed deep concern over the Super Eagles’ precarious position. Currently, they sit second from the bottom in their qualifying group, a far cry from their usual dominant presence on the continental stage.

“If they miss another World Cup, for a football nation of Nigeria’s stature, with some of the best players in Africa, it would be a little bit shameful,” Rohr stated.

He underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the collective effort required from the players, coaching staff, and the Nigerian Football Federation to turn the tide.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s recent failures, Rohr pointed to the significant disappointment of missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

For a country that has qualified for six of the last eight World Cups, another absence from the global stage would be a severe blow to their football heritage.

Rohr stressed, “The players will need to do everything to ensure they go to the World Cup, as must the federation and staff. But now, they must be realistic and acknowledge they have only three points from four games.”

With just a few matches remaining in the qualifiers, the Super Eagles face mounting pressure to secure their spot in the 2026 tournament. Each game is now a must-win if they are to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

The stakes could not be higher as the entire nation watches with bated breath, hoping for a revival that will see Nigeria reclaim its place on the world stage in 2026.
