Argentina left it late to see off hard-fighting Chile to book their slot in the knockout of Copa America 2024, MySportDab reports.

The 2022 World Cup winners went into the game with three points after their opening Group A win over Canada. They needed a win to secure a place in the knockout of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Chile needed to boost their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 after they drew Peru in their opening game.

It was a tight affair as the two sides locked horns in a cracker. Chile put up an impressive display and matched the Argentine’s pace and offensives. It was a barren run in the first half with both sides unable to find the back of the net.

However, the South American and world champions had a slight advantage over the Chileans with countless offensives.

In the second half, it was another near deadlock both sides held each other to ransom with no clearcut chances. It almost ended in a draw but the Albiceleste finally got the better of the opponents.

Two minutes before regulation time, Lautaro Martinez broke the goal deadlock and fired the team into the lead.

The goal set the game for a nervy finish as Chile ramped up attempts to find a late equaliser all to no avail as Argentina held on to secure a crucial victory.

The win has seen the Albiceleste go top of Group A with maximum 6 points to book a place in the knockout of the competition. Chile, who are down bottom of the group with just a point from two games, will need a win against Canada in their last group match to qualify for the next round.
