Bayer Leverkusen steamrollered to a thumping 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen to win their first-ever Bundesliga title, MySportDab reports.
The Xavi Alonso-led side needed victory against Werder Bremen to seal their first German championship after challengers Bayern Munich closed the gap on the top to 13 points.
With five matches left to the end of the campaign, Xabi Alonso was standing on the threshold of history as he sets out to end the Werkself’s Bundesliga title deadlock.
All odds pointed in Bayer Leverkusen’s favor. They had romped to a groundbreaking domestic and European campaign with 0 defeats this season but Xabi Alonso refused to take chances with the visitors as he fielded his strongest legs for the crucial tie.
Bayer Leverkusen started on the front foot, and were set to coast to victory with their dominant performance.
In the 25th minute, Werder Bremen, reeling under heavy pressure conceded a spot-kick and Nigeria forward Victor Boniface spotlessly converted it to give the home side the lead.
The hosts continued on their ascendant run despite taking the lead and were certainly set to cruise to victory.
However, Werder Bremen held their nerves to scuttle Leverkusen’s incessant offensives mad prevented them from doing more damage.
It ended 1-0 at the break with Bayer Leverkusen closing in on their first Bundesliga title.
In the second half, Werder Bremen collapsed like a pack of cards as Bayer Leverkusen unleash in full force their attacking arsenal.
Granit Xhaka doubled the lead for the hosts in the 60th minute before Florian Wirtz added to the tally eight minutes to make it 3-0.
It was gameover for Werder Bremen as Bayer Leverkusen showed no signs of slowing down the goalscoring rout despite going three goals up.
In the 83rd minute, Florian Wirtz scored again to make it 4-0 before completing his hat-trick in the 90th minute to seal a thumping 5-0 victory.
