It was the USA dominating and giving a more superior performance as the first half began.
The USA needed to win to stand a chance of qualifying for the next round of the competition.

Iran gave a good display but were largely unimpressive going forward, losing possession and never firing an attempt at the USA goalkeeper.
They did not record even a single goal attempt but were able to check the mounting pressure of the USA.
It was still goalless as the match hit the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the USA exerted absolute dominance in the game.
They were more threatening going forward and had some chances in the match, which they were unable to convert.
The Americans finally broke the goal deadlock in the 38th minute with a fantastic volley from Pulisic.

Second Half Report
Nothing really changed in the second half of the encounter after both filed back into the pitch for the last 45 minutes of the game.
The USA still dominated the game and looked set to double their lead and secure the win.
They continue to mount pressure and threaten the Iranian defence when launching attacks.
Iran also gave a better performance and did better while attacking to find an equaliser, but could not make anything happen.
The game finally ended with the USA securing a 1-0 victory to qualify for the Round of 16 of the tournament.
