Brenda Warner is a former United States Marine, registered nurse, philanthropist, and New York Times bestselling author, best known publicly as the wife of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner.
Long before she became known through her marriage, Brenda had already lived a full and difficult life that included military service, a first marriage marked by tragedy, single motherhood, and financial hardship.
Married to Kurt since 1997, she has since built a public life centered on faith, family, and advocacy for people with special needs, while also carving out her own personal reinvention later in life by taking up welding at 51.
Brenda Warner Biography
She was born on June 17, 1967, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Brenda Warner was raised with strong Christian values and was an All American cheerleader in high school.
Rather than attending college, Brenda enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, in part to help ease her parents’ financial burden, and served as a Marine Corps corporal.
While serving in the Marines, Brenda met her first husband, Neil, who was also a Marine. The two married and had a son, Zack, in the late 1980s.
When Zack was four months old, he was accidentally dropped by his father while being bathed, an accident that left him with brain damage and partial blindness.
Doctors initially told Brenda that her son might not survive. He did, though he has lived with intellectual and developmental disabilities ever since.
Brenda and Neil’s marriage ended in divorce while she was pregnant with their second child, and she later gave birth to her daughter, Jesse, as a single mother.
Following the divorce, Brenda attended nursing school while raising two children, one of whom required significant care.
She has since described that period of her life as one of severe financial hardship, including a time when she relied on food stamps.
Kurt Warner
Brenda met Kurt Warner at a country and western bar in Iowa after her mother encouraged her to take a rare night out for herself.
Kurt, then a 21 year old aspiring football player working the night shift at a grocery store while trying to make it in professional football, was immediately taken with her.
The day after they met, he asked a mutual friend for her address and showed up at her home, a bold move Brenda has said she came to admire rather than find alarming.
When she introduced Kurt to her son Zack, he embraced the child without hesitation or judgment, a moment Brenda has cited as pivotal to her growing trust in him.
In 1996, tragedy struck again when Brenda’s parents were killed after a tornado destroyed their home in Mountain View, Arkansas.
Kurt supported Brenda through the loss, and the couple married the following year, on October 11, 1997, at St. John American Lutheran Church, the same church where Brenda’s parents had married.
Following the wedding, Kurt legally adopted Brenda’s two children, Zack and Jesse.
In one of the more unusual details of their early marriage, Kurt was bitten by a spider during the couple’s honeymoon, causing his throwing elbow to swell just before a scheduled tryout with the Chicago Bears.
He was forced to miss the opportunity, and the Bears never called him again, though his career soon took off elsewhere.
The couple went on to have five more children together: Kade, Elijah, Jada Jo, and twins Sienna and Sierra, bringing their family to seven children, including Zack and Jesse.
The Warners have built what they both describe as a deeply faith centered, tightly knit blended family. Zack, now in his mid thirties, lives at Treasure House, an assisted living community in Glendale, Arizona, that Brenda and Kurt helped establish to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Brenda has spoken about her hope that Treasure House can serve as a model for how communities support individuals like her son, describing it as one of the achievements of which she is most proud.
Career
Brenda Warner co founded the First Things First Foundation with Kurt in 2001, an organization centered on Christian values and support for underserved families, alongside Treasure House. Brenda has served in a leadership role within the foundation for many years.
Brenda is also an accomplished author. In 2009, she and Kurt co wrote First Things First: Rules of Being a Warner, which became a New York Times bestseller.
In 2011, she published her solo memoir, One Call Away: Answering Life’s Challenges with Unshakable Faith, detailing her journey from a difficult first marriage and single motherhood to her life with Kurt.
She has since become a sought after public speaker, sharing her story with audiences to encourage others facing similarly difficult circumstances, including single mothers, parents of children with special needs, and people navigating grief.
At 51, Brenda took up welding, a hobby she has described as a tribute to her father, who worked for many years as a blue collar employee at John Deere.
She has said that turning 50, the same age her mother was when she died, prompted her to pursue something entirely her own, regardless of what others thought, after spending years prioritizing Kurt’s career over her own personal interests.
She now maintains a welding studio in the Warners’ garage, describing it as her happy place.
The Warners’ story was adapted into the 2021 film American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, with Brenda portrayed by Anna Paquin and Kurt portrayed by Zachary Levi. Brenda also served as an executive producer on the film.
