Barcelona have now sacked Coach Ronald Koeman very early this morning after Wednesday’s loss in La Liga, MySportDab reports.
The current 2021-22 season has been Barcelona’s worst start to a season since the 1987-88 season.
Barca finished sixth in La Liga in 1987-88, and if this happens again it would affect the club.
Missing out of the Champions League for Barcelona would have more negative impact of their poor finances.
Barcelona are currently in ninth far closer to the relegation zone than to the top of the La Liga table.
Barca confirmed the exit of Koeman with a statement on social media accounts and the club’s official website.
A statement on the Barcelona website said:
“FC Barcelona can now confirm that Ronald Koeman has been relieved of his duties as first team coach.
“Club, Joan Laporta, made this known to him after the loss to Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say his final goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.
“FC Barcelona wants to thank him for his service and wishes him all the best in his career as a manager.”
Koeman was fired as Barcelona arrived back from a 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano.
Barcelona had not lost a single match against the small club for 19 years.
The 1-0 defeat could have been avoided if Memphis Depay had not missed a penalty.
But, the match yesterday showed how poor Barcelona’s season has been so far.
They have scored only one goal away from home and without a win so far on the road.
In Europe, Barcelona lost their first two group matches for the first time in the club’s Champions League history.
Koeman’s sacking has been long overdue.
Barca president Joan Laporta openly admitted in the summer that the 58-year-old was in charge because no alternative could be found.
Club directors discussed about his future until 4am after he arrived back from Lisbon with financial concerns stopping them.
For sacking Koeman, Barcelona had to pay him off with £10.1million.
Now, Barça could appoint another club Legend Xavi Hernandez as the next manager.
