Manchester United Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now reacted after David De Gea’s penalty miss against Villarreal ended their hopes of a trophy this season, MySportDab reports.

Manchester United failed to show their quality and ended up losing the Europa League final against Villarreal.

Goalkeeper David De Gea’s penalty was saved by rival Geronimo Rulli at the end of a lengthy 22-kick marathon penalty shoot-out.

De Gea’s miss gave Villarreal their first ever major trophy as a football club.

However, Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players are disappointed.

Solskjaer said: ‘We failed to turn up. We did not play the same football we are good at. This is football.

‘Sometimes finals are down to a final decision and that’s the difference between winning and losing.

‘We’ve got to make sure we don’t taste this feeling again in a final.’

Forward Marcus Rashford also spoke after the loss as United ended another season without a trophy.

Rashford said:  ‘The plan here is to win and have worked very hard all season and this was our opportunity to win a trophy but it did not go as we wanted.

‘I can say confidently that we will not give up. No way. The manager can’t give up. He won’t let us to give up and we will be back again next season stronger.

‘We have everything in the team to compete at the best level. We must now show it to the world and ourselves. Why we belong in finals like this, and winning finals.

‘Second is absolutely nothing. Manchester City win the league, we finished second and it does not make a difference. Villarreal won the Europa League, we are second.

‘For us it’s absolutely nothing. There should be nothing like “they were so close” because it is nothing. One winner, one loser. Today we are going home as the losers.

‘I’m 100% confident we can compete. To win big trophies you must show sacrifice. I can show you five, six players in the dressing room who have had injuries from the start of the season.’

After Edinson Cavani scored in the second-half to cancel out Gerard Moreno’s first-half goal there were no further goals in Gdansk until penalties.

Villarreal Coach Unai Emery won the Europa League again for a fourth time.

Solskjaer said: ‘No. This is not a successful season. Trophy is what matter to us so it’s a no.’

De Gea failed to save any of the 11 penalties and the last time he saved a penalty was back in April 2016.
