Brighton and Hove Albion grabbed a valuable 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to Yasin Ayari’s first-half goal in the Premier League.
The result handed Enzo Maresca his second consecutive league defeat and gave the Seagulls another important win in their push for a top-four finish this season.
Despite dominating much of the match, City failed to find an equaliser as goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced several important saves which produces all points for the visitors.

Brighton and Hove Albion made a strong start and took the lead in the 11th minute after catching Manchester City’s defence off guard.
The move started with a free-kick that was played towards Diego Gomez. Gomez delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Matheus Nunes failed to clear it properly.
Maxim De Cuyper then helped send the ball back into a dangerous area, allowing Ayari to score from close range, which made it 1-0 as play carried on.
The midfielder finished from around six yards with Gianluigi Donnarumma unable to prevent the goal. The goal gave the host an advantage they needed, while City were forced to chase the game at home.
Manchester City responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Elliot Anderson was influential in midfield and created a promising opportunity for Iliman Ndiaye, whose header went narrowly wide.
Ndiaye later produced an impressive run into the Brighton penalty area but failed to beat Verbruggen when presented with another chance.
Jeremy Doku also caused problems for Brighton’s defence with his pace and dribbling. Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol and Enzo Fernandez had opportunities to get City back into the game, but the host defended well to protect their lead.
City also appealed for penalties after possible handball incidents involving Brighton players Luka Vuskovic and Lewis Dunk. However, the referee did not award a penalty on either occasion.
The Seagulls threatened again after the restart and came close to making it 2-0. De Cuyper found himself in a promising position after receiving a low cross, but he fired his effort over the crossbar when he had a clear opportunity to score.
Ndiaye also threatened with a powerful effort that Verbruggen tipped onto the crossbar. Donnarumma was called into action at the other end as the away side looked to take advantage of the spaces left by City’s attacking approach.
The host introduced Rayan Cherki in the 55th minute, and the substitute quickly made an impact by setting up Nunes for a dangerous effort. However, Verbruggen was equal to the shot and made another important save.
City continued to dominate possession as the second half progressed, but Brighton remained organised at the back. Phil Foden and Allan Elias were introduced as the host looked for a late breakthrough.
Their attacking pressure increased, but Seagull’s defence continued to block shots and clear dangerous deliveries. Cherki came close to scoring from a tight angle but sent his effort into the side netting.

City also had a late opportunity through Nico O’Reilly, whose header went narrowly wide of the post. Verbruggen’s performance proved decisive, with the Brighton goalkeeper making seven saves during the match.
Brighton also received a yellow card for Pascal Gross, who was booked late in the game for stopping a City attack. The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for the away side against Manchester City.
Despite the result, the Citizens remained on 21 points after nine matches, while the Seagulls moved to 19 points and strengthened their position near the top of the Premier League table.
City will now look to recover from back-to-back league defeats, while Brighton can take confidence from a disciplined performance against one of the division’s leading teams.
This defeat won’t go down well with Enzo Maresca who will be looking to make a statement in the upcoming games to ensure his job does not come under pressure.
