Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that João Pedro will miss the club’s upcoming matches after suffering a thigh injury, leaving the Blues without one of their most influential attacking players during a crucial period of the season.
Pedro’s absence was felt during Chelsea’s recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, with the Brazilian missing from the squad after unexpectedly dropping out of Alonso’s plans. The setback followed another Chelsea defeat without scoring against Brentford last month, when the forward was also unavailable.
The 24-year-old has quickly established himself as a key figure at Stamford Bridge since arriving at the club, scoring 23 goals in all competitions during his first 12 months and recording 32 goal contributions when assists are included.

He has continued that impressive form into the 2026–27 campaign, registering eight goals and assists in seven games.
His importance extends beyond scoring, with his movement, link-up play and ability to connect Chelsea’s attack making him difficult to replace.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool, Alonso admitted that losing the Brazilian would be a significant setback.
“He is a key player. We will miss him,” the Spaniard said.
“But we will have to be ready to deal with the injury and to be competitive and to try to win games with the players that we have available.”
What injury has João Pedro suffered?

Alonso confirmed that Pedro was dealing with a thigh injury but declined to provide a precise diagnosis or a definitive recovery date.
The problem came at an unfortunate time for Chelsea, who have relied heavily on the Brazilian’s attacking contributions since his arrival.
Pedro has experienced muscle-related setbacks previously in his career. He missed two matches with a thigh problem in April of the previous season and was sidelined for almost two months with a hamstring injury during the 2023–24 campaign while playing for Brighton & Hove Albion.
He also experienced a calf problem during his time at Watford in the 2022–23 season.
However, his injury history does not suggest that he has regularly struggled with long spells on the sidelines. The immediate concern for Chelsea is ensuring that he recovers properly rather than rushing him back before he is ready.
When will João Pedro return?

Chelsea have not announced an exact return date, with Alonso indicating that the forward would be unavailable for the next few matches.
“It’s a few weeks sidelined,” the manager explained, while refusing to make a firm prediction about the length of his absence.
“Let’s see how many [weeks] … We don’t want to predict that. But he will not be ready for the next games.”
The comments suggest that Pedro could miss Chelsea’s Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool and their Premier League meeting with Manchester United on October 31.
His availability for the league fixture against Sunderland on November 8 also appeared uncertain, with a return after the November international break potentially more realistic.
Chelsea face Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on November 21, which could provide a possible target if Pedro’s recovery progresses as hoped. However, that date remains speculative until the club provides a clearer medical update.
Who can replace João Pedro?

Pedro’s absence presents Alonso with a difficult selection problem because Chelsea have struggled to find another forward capable of offering the same combination of goals, creativity and link-up play.
Cole Palmer is the club’s next most prolific goalscorer since the start of the previous season, with 15 goals across all competitions, but his strengths do not necessarily make him a direct replacement for Pedro’s overall contribution.
Morgan Rogers struggled when asked to lead the line against Tottenham after being moved away from his preferred inside-forward position on the left.
Danny Welbeck was brought in to provide additional experience and occasional cover, particularly in domestic cup competitions, rather than become a regular starter. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Emegha has yet to feature because of injury.
Nicolas Jackson remains another potential option, although he is currently playing for Aston Villa.
These alternatives leave Alonso with several decisions to make as Chelsea attempt to maintain their momentum without their leading attacking contributor.
