Draymond Green has committed his future to the Golden State Warriors after agreeing to a new one-year contract worth $27.7 million, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his NBA future.
The veteran forward had surprisingly declined his previous player option earlier in free agency, raising doubts about whether he would remain with the Warriors. However, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, both parties have now reached an agreement following Golden State’s failed pursuit of LeBron James.
The Warriors had been monitoring James’ availability throughout the summer, hoping to add another superstar alongside Stephen Curry. Those ambitions ended when the four-time NBA champion opted to join the Philadelphia 76ers, prompting Golden State to shift its attention towards securing Green’s services.
Interestingly, Green’s new contract is only slightly higher than the $27.6 million player option he turned down earlier in the offseason.
The decision to reject the option allowed the Warriors greater financial flexibility while exploring blockbuster moves in the market before ultimately returning to negotiate with one of the franchise’s longest-serving stars.
Green will now enter his 15th consecutive season with the Warriors, continuing a remarkable partnership that has delivered four NBA championships. Among active Golden State players, only Stephen Curry has spent longer with the franchise, preparing for his 18th campaign in the Bay Area.
Although Green is no longer producing at the same level as during the Warriors’ dominant years, he remains one of the team’s most influential figures. His defensive versatility, leadership and experience continue to make him a crucial part of Steve Kerr’s system as Golden State aims to remain a championship contender.
The new contract does not include a no-trade clause, meaning the Warriors retain flexibility should they decide to reshape the roster in the future. For now, though, Green is expected to remain a central figure both on and off the court.
Last season, the 35-year-old appeared in 68 games, averaging 27.5 minutes per contest as his role was gradually reduced. Green had previously admitted he was prepared to accept fewer minutes if it benefited the team’s success.
His future looked far less certain earlier in the year when Golden State explored a blockbuster move for Giannis Antetokounmpo before the trade deadline. Green’s name surfaced in discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks, a development he later admitted was difficult to process.
“I am a human being. There was a moment when I thought, ‘Are they really going to do this to me?’ But I understand this business as well as any other player. This is Giannis Antetokounmpo. They are not going to trade me for peanuts,” Green told ESPN.
Neither the Giannis pursuit nor the later attempt to land LeBron materialised, leaving the Warriors to focus on preserving the championship core that has defined one of the NBA’s greatest dynasties.
With Green’s future now secured, Golden State can turn its attention to strengthening the rest of the roster around Curry and Green as they prepare for another push towards the NBA title.
