The USA national team advanced into the 2026 World Cup round 16 after beating Bosnia And Herzegovina 2-0 despite one man disadvantage.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side got the result, but they will have to be without their star player Folarin Balogun who was shown a red card in the second half.

The United States men’s national Football team secured a historic victory, which successfully put them into to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2002.

The match began with the U.S. maintaining steady control of possession. Throughout the first half, the American side pushed for an opening, eventually breaking through in the 45th minute.

Following a well-timed touch from captain Tim Ream, the ball moved through midfield to reach Folarin Balogun.

Despite pressure from the Bosnian defense, Balogun remained composed, firing a low, left-footed strike into the net to give the United States a 1–0 lead just before the halftime whistle.

The second half brought a significant test for the hosts. In the 64th minute, Folarin Balogun was shown a red card following a VAR review for a foul on Tarik Muharemovic.

Playing with 10 men for the remainder of the game, the USA team was forced to adjust its strategy, prioritizing defensive stability and composure under mounting pressure from the Bosnian side.

Rather than collapsing, the American squad showed remarkable resilience. Goalkeeper Matt Freese proved reliable between the posts, securing his second clean sheet of the tournament and matching a national team record for World Cup shutouts.

With Bosnia and Herzegovina searching for an equalizer, the host nation found a critical second goal in the 82nd minute.

After a foul on Sergino Dest, the Americans were awarded a free kick approximately 20 yards from the goal. Midfielder Malik Tillman stepped up and delivered a brilliant, curling strike that beat the goalkeeper, effectively sealing the 2–0 victory.

The result marks the United States’ third win of the 2026 tournament, the most in a single edition of the World Cup in program history.

By securing this win, they has earned a spot in the Round of 16, where they are set to face Belgium in Seattle on July 6.

While the team will be without Balogun for the next round due to his red card, the performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina has solidified the belief that this group is capable of competing at the highest level.

Bosnia and Herzegovina loss brings a spirited World Cup journey to a close, ending their run in the knockout stages of the competition.

It is all work for the United States as they will do everything possible in their next match to secure the needed victory against Belgium who came from 2 goal down to beat Senegal.
