Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, stormed into the final of the 2025 FIBA Africa Women’s Championship after pulling off a stunning 75–68 comeback win over Senegal in Saturday’s semifinal at the Palais des Sports, Abidjan, MySportDab reports.
The four-time defending champions were pushed to the limit by a determined Senegalese side, who led for most of the game.
Senegal edged the opening quarter 22–17 and continued their strong play into the second quarter, taking a narrow 21–20 advantage to go into halftime up 43–37.
Despite leveling the third quarter at 15–15, Nigeria still found themselves trailing 58–52 heading into the final period.
But Coach Rena Wakama’s side refused to buckle under pressure. In a remarkable turnaround, the D’Tigress dominated the fourth quarter 23–10, flipping the contest and booking their spot in the final.
The victory was built on Nigeria’s trademark defensive grit and team cohesion, with key plays from their experienced core turning the tide at crucial moments.
The win extended D’Tigress’ unbeaten run at the Women’s AfroBasket to 28 games and leaves them just one step away from a record fifth consecutive continental title.
Saturday’s win also secures Nigeria’s place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup African Qualifying Tournament.
Coach Wakama praised her players’ mental strength and resilience: “We were tested, but the girls showed championship mentality. They never gave up, and that’s what champions do.”
D’Tigress will now face the winner of the second semifinal between Mali and South Sudan in Sunday’s final, as they aim to write yet another golden chapter in African basketball history.
