The Spanish Police have issued a new statement to further clear the mists on the circumstances that led to the sudden demise of Diogo Jota, MySportDab reports.
The footballing world and followers of the sport awoke to the tragic news of the player’s death on Thursday, leading to the outpouring of sympathies and condolences from around the globe.
Details of the incident reveal Jota was onboard the vehicle – a Lamborghini – with his brother Andre along Spain’s A-25 motorway in Zamora when they got involved in an accident.
The high-end sports utility vehicle was smashed to smithereens and roasted to ashes as it caught fire after the tire burst.
Before the arrival of emergency services, the two brothers were reportedly burned beyond recognition to death.
They were repatriated to Portugal and then buried in a poignant funeral that was graced by Liverpool and Portuguese players.
Meanwhile, there were sketchy details on some tiny details of the accident such as the speed and the driver.
Spanish investigators and security operatives divulged readily available details of the incident but couldn’t ascertain whether the vehicle was speeding and who the driver was.
Now, following further investigations, they have ascertained that the vehicle was driven at top speed, beyond recommended limits.
The statement also added that available evidence indicates Jota must have been the driver of the vehicle.
“Among other things traffic police from the Zamora branch of the Civil Guard are studying the tread marked by one of the wheels of the vehicle. Everything is also pointing to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed on that stretch of the motorway.
“All the tests carried out for the moment point to the driver of the crash vehicle being Diogo Jota,” the statement reads.
Jota made over 180 appearances for Liverpool before his death and was married to his childhood Ruto Cardozo – the mother of his three children – just two weeks earlier before the incident.
