F1 Plans Mandatory Pit Stop Increase to Improve Monaco Grand Prix Racing

Formula 1 has announced plans to introduce additional mandatory pit stops at the Monaco Grand Prix in an effort to enhance racing and reduce the processional nature of the event, MySportDab Reports.

The tight and twisty Monaco circuit has long been criticized for a lack of overtaking opportunities, with modern F1 cars making it even harder to challenge for positions.

The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix highlighted this issue, as the top 10 drivers maintained their starting positions throughout the race, with a red flag on the opening lap eliminating any significant strategic variation.

Currently, F1 regulations mandate the use of at least two different dry tyre compounds in a race, effectively requiring one pit stop in dry conditions unless a red flag allows tyre changes.

F1However, the FIA is now looking to enforce additional stops to encourage varied strategies and improve race dynamics.

“With the aim of promoting better racing at the Monaco Grand Prix, the commission discussed proposals for Monaco-specific regulations,” the FIA said in a statement following an F1 Commission meeting in London.

“The commission agreed to increase the numbers of mandatory pit stops in the race. These proposals will be further discussed by the Sporting Advisory Committee in the coming weeks.”

F1 and the Monaco Grand Prix organizers signed a new contract last year, ensuring the race remains on the calendar until at least 2031. The proposed rule changes could help make future editions of the prestigious event more exciting for drivers and fans alike.
