Cristiano Ronaldo faces a potential disciplinary punishment from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after the governing body opened proceedings against the forward over his abrupt departure from Portugal’s training camp during the September-October international break.
The 41-year-old reportedly left the national team following a disagreement with manager Jorge Jesus over his role in the squad and what he considered broken promises ahead of a subsequent press conference.
Ronaldo was unhappy after being benched against Norway and later took issue with Jesus for allegedly failing to follow a list of pre-agreed talking points. The disagreement escalated into a dramatic departure that has now prompted official action from the federation.

In a statement, the FPF confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on Oct. 9, 2026, for the purpose of determining the potential disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on Oct. 7, 2026,” the federation stated.
The FPF added that Ronaldo had been placed under a non-automatic provisional suspension and that the case had been classified as urgent.
“The case was sent on Oct. 10, 2026, to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee, with public disclosure excluded until the conclusion of the investigation.”
The investigation will determine the disciplinary consequences of Ronaldo’s actions, although the federation has not announced a final punishment.
Ronaldo Acknowledges Possible Punishment

Ronaldo had already indicated that he expected the federation to take action over his decision to leave the national team camp.
In a lengthy statement explaining his disagreement with Jesus, the Portugal captain acknowledged that his status as the team’s leader meant he should be held accountable.
“The consequences of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I believe the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player; I am a team captain, and that is an aggravating factor.
“I have already apologized, but I know that actions must have consequences. Anyone in football as I am knows that, regardless of each person’s status, the rules are the same for everyone.”
His comments suggested that he was prepared to accept the outcome of the disciplinary process rather than challenge the federation’s authority.
However, the length and nature of any potential suspension remain unclear. Portugal president Pedro Proença has reportedly expressed an expectation that Ronaldo will return to the squad for the November international break.
Portugal have won all four of their autumn matches, with Ronaldo absent from three of those fixtures. The results have demonstrated that the team can continue collecting victories without its record goalscorer, although his experience and influence remain important considerations for the national side.
Portugal Hope to Resolve Ronaldo and Jesus Dispute

Portugal have two UEFA Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales scheduled before the end of the year, with Ronaldo’s potential availability likely to attract attention as the federation works through the disciplinary case.
The disagreement with Jesus has raised questions about whether the forward will return to the national team under the current manager.
Reports have suggested that the federation wants to preserve its relationship with Ronaldo, who remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the country’s most celebrated footballers.
Ronaldo’s departure has created an uncomfortable situation for the governing body, which must balance its desire to retain an influential player with the need to enforce team rules.
A suspension could affect his immediate involvement with Portugal, but it would not necessarily prevent the federation from organising a farewell ceremony when he eventually retires.
Ronaldo Dismisses Retirement Talk

Ronaldo also addressed speculation that his disagreement with Jesus could accelerate his retirement from international football.
The forward made it clear that he intended to continue representing Portugal if he remained physically fit and was playing regularly for his club.
“If I am physically well, playing for my club, hopefully with goals, after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”
His statement indicated that the dispute had not changed his immediate ambition to continue playing for Portugal.
For now, Ronaldo must await the outcome of the FPF investigation, with the possibility of a suspension hanging over his next international appearance.
The coming weeks should provide greater clarity on the federation’s decision, his relationship with Jesus and whether he will return to the squad for the November fixtures.
Despite the uncertainty, Ronaldo’s comments suggest that his international career is not yet over, leaving the door open for another chapter with Portugal once the disciplinary matter is resolved.
