Both Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored one goal each as Switzerland overrun Algeria with a 2-0 result to book their place in the round 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
The result marks a significant breakthrough for the Swiss national team, who finally put an end to an 88-year wait for a knockout-round victory in the tournament.
While Algeria began the game with energy and looked to control the tempo, Switzerland’s disciplined structure proved too difficult to break down.
The tone of the evening was set early. Despite Algeria holding the ball for long stretches during the opening minutes, Switzerland found the breakthrough in the 10th minute.
The move started with young attacker Johan Manzambi, whose pace on the counter-attack left the Algerian defence scrambling. After surging down the left flank, Manzambi squared a perfect ball for Breel Embolo.
The striker made no mistake, calmly tapping the ball into the net to give his team an early 1-0 advantage.
Following the goal, Switzerland settled into a compact defensive shape, often deploying a five-man midfield. This tactical shift effectively cut off supply lines to Algeria’s key creators, including captain Riyad Mahrez.
Algeria struggled to find space in the final third, with their most dangerous moment coming in stoppage time of the first half when Ibrahim Maza dragged a snap shot just wide of the post.
The start of the second half was disastrous for the North African side. Barely a minute after the restart, a defensive lapse by Algeria allowed the ball to fall kindly to Dan Ndoye at the top of the box.
The winger struck a powerful shot that squeezed past goalkeeper Luca Zidane, putting Switzerland firmly in control at 2-0.
The second goal effectively ended Algeria’s realistic hopes of a comeback. Switzerland’s midfield veterans, Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler, maintained total command of the centre of the pitch, ensuring the Algerians could not build any consistent momentum.
The Swiss remained organized, thwarting any desperate attempts from the opposition as the match carried on with the final minutes.
There was one minor blemish on an otherwise perfect night for the Swiss. Substitute Fabian Rieder found himself with an open net in the final stages of the match but somehow scuffed his effort, allowing the goalkeeper to recover.
While the moment sparked audible groans from the stands, it had no impact on the final outcome. Switzerland ended up claiming a 2-0 victory sending Algeria out of the World Cup.
With this victory, Switzerland remains unbeaten in the tournament. They now look forward to a Round of 16 clash back in Vancouver next Tuesday, where they will face the winner of the tie between Colombia and Ghana.
For Algeria, the defeat brings their first World Cup appearance since 2014 to a close. Despite a spirited performance and flashes of quality, they were unable to overcome the defensive wall set up by the Swiss.
It wasn’t meant to be for the African nation as they bowed out of the tournament against a solid team in Switzerland after 90 minutes of action.
