France and Spain will renew one of international football’s fiercest rivalries on Tuesday night, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.
The European heavyweights meet in Dallas knowing victory will secure a showdown against either England or Argentina, as both nations edge closer to lifting football’s biggest prize.
Didier Deschamps’ France have been among the tournament’s standout performers, winning all six of their matches while scoring 16 goals. Les Bleus comfortably topped Group I before dispatching Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco to book their place in a third consecutive World Cup semi-final.
France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals despite Kylian Mbappe missing a first-half penalty. The captain quickly made amends by opening the scoring with a brilliant finish before setting up Ousmane Dembele to seal the victory.
Mbappe has enjoyed another sensational tournament, leading the Golden Boot race with eight goals. His partnership with Ballon d’Or winner Dembele, alongside Michael Olise, has given France one of the most dangerous attacking units in the competition.
The semi-final also carries extra significance for Deschamps, who is expected to step down after the tournament. The 57-year-old will oversee his 26th World Cup match, moving past legendary Germany coach Helmut Schon for the most matches managed in the competition’s history.
History also favours France. They have won each of their last four World Cup semi-finals and have not conceded in their previous three appearances at this stage. Their only previous World Cup meeting with Spain also ended in a 3-1 victory after coming from behind.
However, Spain arrive in Texas with plenty of confidence of their own.
Luis de la Fuente’s side have won seven of their last 10 meetings against France, including victories in the Euro 2024 semi-finals and last year’s dramatic UEFA Nations League clash, which ended 5-4.
Spain have also been incredibly consistent throughout the tournament. After topping Group H, they eliminated Austria before edging Portugal and Belgium thanks to decisive late goals from substitute Mikel Merino.
Merino has become Spain’s unlikely hero after scoring winning goals in consecutive knockout matches, while goalkeeper Unai Simon had kept six straight World Cup clean sheets before Belgium finally found a breakthrough in the quarter-finals.
The reigning European champions have now lost only one of their last 27 matches at major tournaments and remain unbeaten in their last 14.
Team selection could play a crucial role.
France expect Mbappe to recover from a minor ankle sprain, while midfielder Manu Kone should also be available despite a knee concern. Aurelien Tchouameni is pushing to return to the starting lineup after recovering from a thigh injury.
Spain have several selection dilemmas, with Merino, Pedri, Ferran Torres, Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino all competing for starting places. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will once again be expected to provide inspiration from the right wing.
With two of Europe’s finest squads battling for a place in the World Cup final, fans can expect a tense tactical contest filled with world-class talent.
France’s clinical attack will test Spain’s disciplined defence, while La Roja’s possession-based approach will challenge Deschamps’ increasingly adventurous side. If little separates the teams after 90 minutes, another dramatic penalty shootout could ultimately decide who reaches Sunday’s final.
