Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Long-Term Liverpool Contract to End Real Madrid Speculation

Dominik Szoboszlai has committed his long-term future to Liverpool after signing a new contract, bringing an end to speculation linking the Hungary captain with a move to Real Madrid.

The midfielder has become one of Liverpool’s most influential players since joining from RB Leipzig in a £60 million deal in 2023, and the club has now rewarded his performances with a fresh agreement believed to keep him at Anfield for the next five years.

Szoboszlai’s previous deal was set to expire in 2028, leading to reports that Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were monitoring his situation. However, Liverpool moved quickly to secure one of their most consistent performers under a new long-term contract as they prepare for a new era under head coach Andoni Iraola.

Despite a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League and part ways with Arne Slot, Szoboszlai remained one of the club’s standout players throughout the season.

The 25-year-old produced his best campaign in a Liverpool shirt, contributing 13 goals and 12 assists across 53 appearances in all competitions. His 25 goal involvements were the highest in the squad, while only Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister featured in more matches.

Those performances reinforced his importance to Liverpool’s midfield and convinced the club to tie him down to a longer contract amid growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Speaking after signing the extension, Szoboszlai described the occasion as one of the greatest moments of his football career.

“It’s maybe my biggest day. There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first time and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three,” he said.

The Hungarian international also made it clear that his ambitions at Liverpool have not changed despite the club enduring a difficult campaign last season.

“I can’t wait to go again and again and again. There’s always more to come. I think I can do even better.

“I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid – that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.”

Szoboszlai added that his desire to win every major trophy remains stronger than ever.

“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a moment, either.

“It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”

His contract extension provides a major boost for Liverpool as Iraola begins rebuilding the squad following last season’s disappointing finish. Keeping one of the team’s creative leaders was viewed as a priority, especially with Europe’s elite clubs circling.

Liverpool will begin the new Premier League season away to Newcastle United on August 23 before facing Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town, Fulham and Bournemouth ahead of the first international break.

With his future now secured, Szoboszlai will be expected to play a central role in Liverpool’s bid to return to the Premier League’s top four and challenge once again for domestic and European honours under their new manager.
