Switzerland claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada at a packed BC Place in Vancouver in a match which confirmed their place in the knockout phase.

The result saw the Swiss clinch the top spot in the group, forcing the Canadian side to navigate the challenges of the tournament as a runner-up.

The opening 45 minutes of the match were defined by tension and tactical discipline. With both teams entering the fixture knowing a positive result would guarantee their progression, the first half was a balanced match.

Canada, spurred on by the home crowd, looked sharp in transition, with Cyle Larin testing Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a clever effort in the 33rd minute.

However, the Swiss defensive line anchored by Manuel Akanji and Ricardo remained resolute, keeping the scoreboard blank heading into the interval.

The rhythm shifted dramatically immediately after the restart. Switzerland emerged with renewed attacking intent, and within sixty seconds of the second half, Rubén Vargas broke the deadlock.

His clinical strike silenced the home supporters and forced Canada to move out of their cautious shell.

Canada’s attempt to find an equalizer left gaps at the back, which the experienced Swiss side exploited with ruthless efficiency.

In the 57th minute, a surging Breel Embolo held off a defender to find space for a precise pass into the box, allowing Johan Manzambi to fire home a powerful shot past Canadian keeper Maxime Crépeau.

At 2-0, Switzerland appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable finish, dictating the tempo and managing possession effectively.

Refusing to go down without a fight, the Canadians threw everything forward in the final quarter of the match.

The introduction of fresh legs injected life into the attack, and the pressure eventually told in the 76th minute.

Substitute Promise David capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Swiss, volleying home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The final ten minutes were an exhilarating scramble, with Canada pushing for a dramatic equalizer that would have restored their lead at the top of the group.

However, the Swiss defense managed to weather the late storm, holding firm under intense scrutiny to claim all three points from a 2-1 result.

For Switzerland, the victory confirms their status as a team that can perform under pressure, proving their defensive solidity and clinical edge in the final third.

For Canada, despite the disappointment of losing the Group B crown, the campaign remains historic. As they head into the Round of 32, the Les Rouges will look to build on the resilience they showed in the closing stages of today’s thriller.

As the group stage concludes, both sides now turn their attention to the knockout rounds, where the margins for error will be even slimmer.

With the world watching, the momentum shifts from the group stage to the do-or-die atmosphere of the tournament’s next phase.

Both Switzerland and Canada already booked their places in the knockout phase which they would look to carry on by beating their next opponent if they want to stay in the tournament.
