Qatar vs Switzerland Preview: Team News, Predicted Lineups and Prediction

Switzerland will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Qatar on Saturday knowing that an opening victory could put them firmly in control of Group B.

The two nations meet at Estadio Guadalajara in their first-ever competitive encounter, with Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina also battling for qualification from what is widely considered one of the tournament’s most balanced groups.

For Qatar, this marks only their second appearance at a World Cup after hosting the tournament in 2022. The Maroons failed to progress beyond the group stage on that occasion and arrive in North America hoping to make history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.

However, Julen Lopetegui’s side head into the competition struggling for form. Qatar have failed to win any of their last six matches in all competitions, including a 1-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland and a 1-1 draw against El Salvador in their final warm-up fixture.

Despite those results, Qatar can draw confidence from their previous meeting with Switzerland, having secured a 1-0 victory in a friendly encounter back in 2018.

Switzerland, meanwhile, arrive with considerably more World Cup experience. This summer’s tournament represents their 13th appearance on football’s biggest stage, and they have reached the Round of 16 in each of the last three editions.

Head coach Murat Yakin has built a squad capable of competing with many of the world’s top nations. Switzerland have suffered just one defeat in their last 14 matches across all competitions and recently impressed in friendly matches against Jordan and Australia.

The experienced core of Manuel Akanji, Granit Xhaka, Ricardo Rodriguez and Remo Freuler will be expected to provide leadership, while Zeki Amdouni is likely to spearhead the attack ahead of Breel Embolo.

Qatar’s hopes will largely rest on star forward Akram Afif, who has scored 39 goals for his country and remains their biggest attacking threat. He is expected to lead the line alongside Yusuf Abdurisag and Edmilson Junior.

The importance of the opening fixture cannot be overstated. With several third-placed teams advancing to the knockout rounds, a positive result would significantly improve either nation’s chances of progressing.

While Qatar possess dangerous attacking players and have shown they can compete against quality opposition, Switzerland appear to have greater depth, experience and consistency throughout the squad.

Prediction: Qatar 1-2 Switzerland.

A victory for the Swiss would provide the perfect platform ahead of upcoming group-stage clashes against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada, while Qatar know that even a point could prove valuable in their pursuit of a historic place in the knockout rounds.
