Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room delivered one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in World Cup history as the tournament debutants earned their first-ever point with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Ecuador at Kansas City Stadium.
Just days after conceding seven goals against Germany, Curacao produced a remarkable response, led by Room, who made 15 saves to deny a relentless Ecuador side and keep his nation’s World Cup hopes alive. The result also confirmed Germany as Group E winners following their victory over Ivory Coast earlier in the day.
Ecuador started brightly and almost broke the deadlock inside three minutes. Moises Caicedo’s precise pass released Enner Valencia behind the Curacao defence, but Room reacted brilliantly to tip the striker’s effort behind for a corner.
That early save set the tone for what became a frustrating afternoon for Sebastian Beccacece’s men. Room continued to stand firm, first denying John Yeboah before producing another excellent stop to keep out Valencia from close range after a dangerous delivery from Piero Hincapie.
Ecuador dominated possession and chances throughout the opening half, but Curacao’s goalkeeper repeatedly came to the rescue. Yeboah’s powerful strike shortly before the break forced another impressive save as Curacao somehow reached half-time level.
The pressure intensified after the interval. Caicedo tested Room from distance, while Gonzalo Plata’s header also failed to beat the inspired shot-stopper. Ecuador continued to push forward, but Curacao briefly threatened on the counterattack through Leandro Bacuna and Livano Comenencia, only for Hernan Galindez to make two important saves.
Room’s heroics reached another level just after the hour mark. He got down quickly to push Valencia’s header away before surviving a chaotic corner sequence that saw Sherel Floranus produce a crucial defensive intervention and Willian Pacho’s follow-up effort saved.
Both sides had chances to snatch victory in the closing stages. Galindez produced a sharp reflex stop to deny Juninho Bacuna, while Room responded with yet another outstanding save to push Pedro Vite’s fierce effort over the crossbar.
Even when Room was finally beaten in the 90th minute, the woodwork came to Curacao’s rescue as Angelo Preciado’s cross clipped the crossbar. Moments later, the final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among Curacao’s players and supporters.
The statistics highlighted Ecuador’s dominance. They registered 27 shots, including 15 on target, and generated an expected goals tally of 3.05. Curacao managed just 10 attempts and an xG of 0.48, yet left with the point.
Room’s 15 saves matched the World Cup record set by Tim Howard against Belgium in 2014, although Howard’s achievement came during extra time.
For Ecuador, the result deepened concerns. They are now winless in four consecutive World Cup matches, their longest such run in the competition, and must defeat Germany in their final Group E match to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Curacao, meanwhile, have already made history. After suffering a heavy defeat in their opening match, they produced a resilient display that will be remembered as one of the greatest defensive efforts by a World Cup debutant.
