Lionel Messi was down to tears as Argentina lined up against Zambia in their last international friendly before the 2026 World Cup, MySportDab reports.

The Inter Miami sensation was absent from the starting lineup in the team’s 2–1 win over Mauritania in their first friendly and only came on as a substitute due to fitness concerns.

However, he was back in the starting lineup in last night’s clash against Zambia.

During the pre-match lineup with his teammates, his emotions had the better of him as chants of his name rent the air among the Buenos Aires crowd at La Bombonera.

He could be seen holding back tears as his name kept echoing through the crowd

.

His reaction has sparked reactions with many pondering whether that will be his last match with Argentina. But did he actually play his last match for Argentina?

With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner, Messi remains a key player in the Argentina squad and is expected to lead the team in the prestigious global football competition in June.

However, last night’s match is likely to be his last game for the team in Argentina; hence the emotion and farewell that greet his presence in the lineup.

Argentina put Zambia to the rout in that match with Messi scoring his 116th international goal and also providing an assist in the match.

He is expected to lead the charge in what is likely to be his last World Cup as the Albiceleste prepare to defend the 2022 World Cup trophy that they won in Saudi Arabia last time out.
