Rooney and Keane Disagree on Carrick as Long-Term Man United Manager

Two legendary figures in the Man United Hall of Fame – Wayne Rooney and Roy Keane – are on the opposite ends of the seething debate on Carrick’s chances as Man United permanent manager, MySportDab reports.

The debate has been raging since Carrick got off the mark as United interim manager, leading the team to five straight victories, including wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Yesterday, the former United midfielder-turned-manager stoke the flames of the debate after he led United to recover from a defeat to Newcastle United by defeating top-four contenders Aston Villa.

Goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and clutch-striker Benjamin Sesko saw United ran out with an emphatic 3–1 victory against Aston Villa, to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish.

That victory against Aston Villa saw Carrick guide United to seven wins from nine games, securing a three-point cushion for the team in the seething race for Champions League football next season.

Despite these gains under Carrick, Roy Keane has still insisted the former teammate (Michael Carrick) is not the right man for a permanent manager role at United.

According to him, United still has better options out there to prise for the job than Carrick. He also stated that it’s has been sliding doors moment for the former Middlesbrough manager – he got the job at perfect time, doing well, but the tides may change if he comes in as permanent manager due to his lack of experience.

“I think to manage Manchester United, you need someone a lot more experienced in terms of winning trophies, competing in Europe and he hasn’t got that.

“He might have that in a few years, and he might be in the mix then, but the fact he’s winning football matches at the moment of course gives him a great chance,” he said.

For Wayne Rooney, Carrick has proven he has what it takes to change United’s narrative as permanent manager and should be given the job.

“100% he should [get the job],” Rooney said. “I have said this. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick. I know him very well. I know his character, his personality.

“It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place and the players needed some love, and he has given them that.”
