Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of club legend Michael Carrick as interim head coach for the remainder of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month, MySportDab Reports.
Amorim was relieved of his duties after mounting pressure surrounding his tenure, which intensified following comments perceived as criticism of the club’s hierarchy after a 1-1 Premier League draw with Leeds United.
His exit prompted United to turn to Darren Fletcher as a temporary solution, with the former midfielder overseeing a 2-2 draw against Burnley and an FA Cup third-round elimination at the hands of Brighton.
Carrick quickly emerged as the leading candidate to take over on an interim basis, beating competition from former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The 44-year-old has now signed a contract that will see him in charge until the end of the campaign.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Carrick described the role as an honour, insisting his immediate focus is on raising standards and uniting the squad.
He expressed confidence in the players’ ability and determination, stressing that there is still plenty to fight for in the closing months of the season.
Carrick enjoyed a hugely successful playing career at Old Trafford, winning 12 major trophies during a 12-year spell in which he made 464 appearances.
After retiring, he served as a first-team coach under Solskjaer and briefly took charge as caretaker manager in late 2021, winning two of his three matches.
More recently, Carrick was head coach of Middlesbrough from October 2022 until June 2025, overseeing 136 games and guiding the club to the Championship play-offs in his first season.
United currently sit seventh in the Premier League, three points off the Champions League places, with Carrick’s first test coming in Saturday’s Manchester derby against City.
