Jannik Sinner begins his ATP Finals title defense on Sunday, aiming to close a dramatic and successful year with yet another major statement, MySportDab Reports
The world number one has enjoyed a landmark 2025 season, lifting two Grand Slam titles, including a memorable Wimbledon triumph over Carlos Alcaraz, and now returns to Turin as the reigning champion.
Sinner is expected to comfortably progress from the Bjorn Borg group, while Alcaraz headlines the Jimmy Connors group.

Should both players advance, another blockbuster showdown in the semi-finals or final appears highly likely, continuing a rivalry widely considered the defining duel of modern men’s tennis.
“The first match is always crucial here because you’re immediately up against one of the best eight players in the world,” Sinner said on Friday. “If I manage to defend the title, great. If not, it has still been an incredible season with many matches and many wins.”
However, Sinner’s year hasn’t been without controversy. He served a three-month suspension earlier in the season after testing positive for clostebol, despite the World Anti-Doping Agency acknowledging the substance entered his system accidentally.
Additionally, his absence from Italy’s Davis Cup title defense drew criticism from some sections of the Italian media, who have occasionally questioned his national identity due to his South Tyrolean background and residence in Monaco.
Sinner reiterated his pride in representing Italy, and the Turin crowd is expected to show strong support, just as they did during his unbeaten run to last year’s title.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who trained with Sinner on Friday, spoke positively about their rivalry, noting the respect they share off the court.
As both players chase the season-ending No. 1 ranking, Turin prepares for what could be another chapter in one of tennis’ most compelling modern rivalries.
