Liverpool have suffered a shock defeat against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League round five fixture at Anfield, MySportDab reports.
The Reds began proceedings on the front foot, dominating possession and looking set to race into the lead in front of their home fans. However, they were undone just six minutes into the game from the spot.
Croatian attacking sensation Ivan Perisic fired the visitors into the lead, effortlessly converting from the spot. After conceding, Liverpool stepped up proceedings to find the equaliser and finally get back into the game in the 16th minute.
Dominik Szoboszkai scored a stunner to tie the game before the break, thanks to Cody Gakpo’s assists. With the score at 1-1, the game was finely poised for a nervy finish at the break.
However, the Reds continued dominating but were finding it difficult breaking through the visitors’ brink-wall defence. The first half subsequently ended 1-1.
Liverpool were still in the front foot in the second half, but failed to make their dominance count as PSV held firm to keep it the scoreline at 1-1.
In the 56th minute, it was Liverpool who trailed against the run of play as Guul Til raced the Dutch giants into the lead again.
With over half an hour left, Liverpool had a lot to play for despite the one-goal deficit and there were hopes of their possible comeback given their stronger showing.
However, the Reds suffered a final blow to their comeback hopes in the 73rd minute when Couhaib Driouech silenced the Anfield crowd with PSV’s third goal.
Two minutes into stoppage time, Driouech bagged his brace to further sunk the Anfield club, condemning them to a shock 4-1 defeat at the blast of the final whistle, marking their second defeat in five Champions League league phase matches.
