EFL side West Brom have completed the signing of Chelsea’s young talented defender Alfie Gilchrist for a reported fee of £2 million, MySportDab reports.
The 21-year-old who was a product of Chelsea’s academy was promoted to the first team by Mauricio Pochettino in the 2023/2024 season. He went on to make 17 appearances across all competitions in that season.
In April 2024, the England international signed a new two-year contract at Stamford Bridge which runs until 2026, with the option of a further year before being loaned out to Sheffield United.
Gilchrist featured regularly for Sheffield United during the first half of last season, but he sustained an ankle injury at the end of January and subsequently played in just two of the team’s final 17 Championship matches, and failed to make an appearance in the play-offs.
In total, he made 32 appearances in all competitions as the club finished third in the Championship before being beaten in the play-off final by Sunderland.
Several clubs in England and in Saudi Arabia were reportedly interested in signing Gilchrist. But Chelsea, who valued him at £5 million, were only interested in a permanent sale of the defender.
And now, according to reports, the defender will sign with last season’s EFL playoff finalists, West Brom and will complete his medicals later today.
Gilchrist joins the piling list of Chelsea players who are leaving the club this summer. Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix are all set for a new challenges away from the Cobham club, with more players expected to leave as well.
