Liverpool’s record signing Florian Wirtz has been crowned Germany’s Player of the Year, adding another accolade to his growing reputation as one of Europe’s brightest talents, MySportDab Reports.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen in June for an initial £100 million — a fee that could rise to £116 million with add-ons — received 191 votes from German sports journalists.
He finished well ahead of runner-up Michael Olise of Bayern Munich, who collected 81 votes.
Wirtz’s arrival at Anfield was part of a summer spending spree aimed at retaining Liverpool’s Premier League crown.
French forward Hugo Ekitike and Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez also joined the squad, bolstering Jurgen Klopp’s options.
The Germany international arrives on the back of a historic season with Leverkusen, where he played a pivotal role in their unbeaten domestic campaign, lifting both the Bundesliga and German Cup under former coach Xabi Alonso.
Leverkusen’s only defeat in 2023/24 came in the Europa League final against Atalanta.
A Bundesliga Player of the Year winner last term, Wirtz amassed an impressive 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen.
His ability to both score and create makes him a perfect fit for Liverpool’s high-intensity style.
Wirtz has set lofty ambitions at his new club, telling Liverpool’s website: “I would like to win everything every year. Last season they won the Premier League, so my goal is to win it again and also go further in the Champions League.”
With Mohamed Salah still leading the attack, Liverpool hope Wirtz’s creativity will help maintain the Egyptian’s prolific form while sharing the offensive burden.
As Klopp shapes his squad for another title push, the German star’s arrival could prove pivotal in keeping Liverpool at the summit of English football.
