Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has finally let the cat out of the bag on his subtly interesting but mundane decision on Rodrygo, MySportDab reports.
The former Bayer Leverkusen boss appeared to have hit the ground running with his preferred picks in Los Blancos’ starting eleven after resuming just a few weeks ago as their new manager.
And the ongoing FIFA Club World in the USA offered him a perfect opportunity to sample his choices and test-run his strategy.
As expected, attention turned to who breaks even in the Los Blancos’ squad under the Spanish tactician.
And the searchlights have mainly fallen on Rodrygo who appeared to have fallen out of favour under the 43-year-old’s plans.
For the sixth time in the FIFA Club World, he was dropped to the bench in the 4-0 loss to PSG, as Alonso opted for his signature two-man attack featuring Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.
Addressing this move to axe the Brazilian from his starting lineup for the sixth time, Alonso revealed he didn’t play Rodrygo for tactical reasons.
He also added that the decision doesn’t have anything to do with the player’s future at the club.
“I didn’t play Rodrygo for a technical decision. We thought we would be better off with other players. It’s not about his future,” Transfer News Live quotes.
Rodrygo’s misfortunes under Alonso have riled up speculations on his possible transfer exit from the club this summer hence the latter’s additional statement clarifying his future with the team.
While obviously trying to downplay Rodrygo’s imminent exit, it is understood that the Brazilian is poised to call an end to his Real Madrid chapter this summer due to a lack of game time.
They are set to enter into talks to decide on his future after the FIFA Club World Cup, per Fabrizio Romano.
Arsenal are a big mention in the race for Rodrygo with Liverpool also set to join the race if the need arises.
