Wimbledon 2025: Nervy Alcaraz Survives Fognini Scare in Five-Set Opener

Carlos Alcaraz overcame a nervy start and a spirited challenge from veteran Fabio Fognini to begin his Wimbledon title defence with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory in a gruelling first-round clash lasting over four hours on Centre Court, MySportDab Reports.

The 22-year-old Spaniard arrived at SW19 riding a wave of momentum, having won 18 consecutive matches and titles in Rome, Roland Garros, and Queen’s Club.

But despite his recent dominance on grass, Alcaraz admitted that returning to Centre Court left him feeling like a rookie once again.

“It felt like the first time,” the defending champion said. “I was really nervous in the beginning. Wimbledon is different. No matter how well you’re playing, this court brings something extra.”

Fognini, 37, rolled back the years with inspired shot-making, pushing Alcaraz to the brink. The Italian took the second and fourth sets and threatened a major upset before Alcaraz regrouped to dominate the decider.

“It was a struggle,” Alcaraz said. “But it’s a big honour to open the tournament again on Centre Court.”

Up next for Alcaraz is British qualifier Oliver Tarvet, ranked outside the world’s top 700. On paper, it’s a much easier test, but the Spaniard is refusing to take the matchup lightly.

“If he’s in the second round, it’s because he deserves it,” Alcaraz noted. “I have to respect every opponent and be ready to play my best.”

The three-time Grand Slam winner will look to shake off the rust and settle into rhythm as he continues his quest for a third Wimbledon crown.
