The Super Falcons of Nigeria etched their name deeper into African football history by clinching their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, staging a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, MySportDab Report.
Despite falling two goals behind in the first half, Nigeria showed immense grit and resilience to overturn the deficit and secure a memorable triumph.
Morocco, buoyed by a raucous home crowd, started the brighter side and took the lead in the 13th minute through captain Ghizlane Chebbak, who fired a thunderous strike from outside the box.
Sanaâ Mssoudy compounded Nigeria’s woes in the 28th minute, beating Michelle Alozie before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
However, the Super Falcons refused to fold. Esther Okoronkwo kickstarted the comeback in the 63rd minute, converting a penalty awarded after a VAR review for a foul inside the box.
Minutes later, she danced through the Moroccan defence and set up Folashade Ijamilusi for the equaliser, sparking celebrations on the Nigerian bench.
The momentum continued to swing Nigeria’s way as VAR drama unfolded again—Morocco were initially awarded a penalty for handball, only for the decision to be overturned upon review.
Riding that wave of relief, Nigeria pushed forward again and found the winner through Jennifer Echegini, who headed home a brilliant cross from Okoronkwo to complete the turnaround.
With the win, Nigeria extended their record as the most successful team in WAFCON history and sent a strong message ahead of the 2026 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
For Morocco, it was heartbreak on home soil but a valiant effort that highlighted their growth in African women’s football.
