Asisat Oshoala Retirement Rumors Dismissed Ahead of WAFCON Semifinal vs South Africa

Reports suggesting Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala is set to retire after the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) have been debunked, just days before Nigeria’s high-stakes semifinal clash with South Africa, MySportDab Reports.

The six-time CAF African Women’s Player of the Year was alleged to have announced her intention to bow out of international football following the tournament in Morocco, with screenshots of a supposed Facebook post circulating widely on Monday.

The message, attributed to Oshoala, read: “At 30, with six African Women’s Best Player awards, I will bow out to start a new chapter after WAFCON 2024/25.”

However, thorough checks of her verified social media accounts — Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram — show no such post.

Neither Oshoala nor the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has released an official statement regarding her retirement. Coach Justin Madugu has also made no comment on the matter.

The false reports surfaced just 48 hours before Nigeria face defending champions South Africa in Casablanca — a rematch of the 2022 group-stage encounter Nigeria lost.

While Oshoala has not been at her sharpest this tournament, scoring only once against Tunisia, her leadership remains vital as the Super Falcons pursue a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

The former Barcelona Femeni star, now at Bay FC in the United States, has been used sparingly in recent matches but continues to influence the squad off the pitch.

Until there is official confirmation, fans are urged to dismiss the unverified claims and focus on Tuesday’s blockbuster semifinal. If this is to be Oshoala’s final tournament, she will look to end it by helping Nigeria reclaim their African crown.
