He was raised in Greenbrae, California, where he attended Greenbrae School before moving on to Redwood High School in Larkspur.

He was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. He played as a football quarterback and other positions.

He earned the school’s Athlete of the Year honors in his senior year in 1968–69. His athletic prowess led to his induction into the inaugural class of the Redwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

After high school, he attended the College of Marin. As a junior, he played football for two years and intercepted 12 passes.

He then transferred to the University of the Pacific in California, where he continued his football career as a safety, earning all-league honors twice.

He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He furthered his education by obtaining a secondary teaching credential and a Master’s degree in Physical Education in 1976 from the same university.

Carroll’s coaching career began shortly after his graduation. Although he initially tried out for the Honolulu Hawaiians of the World Football League in 1973, he was cut from the team.

He briefly worked selling roofing materials in the Bay Area before being offered a position as a graduate assistant coach at the University of the Pacific in 1974.

Pete Carroll’s wife is Glena Goranson, whom he came upon during his period at the University of the Pacific.

The couple has children named Brennan, Nate, and Jaime. Brennan Carroll has followed in his father’s footsteps and is involved in football coaching.

He then held positions at various institutions, including Arkansas and Iowa State. He also held positions at Ohio State and North Carolina State, primarily focusing on defensive roles.

His transition to the NFL started with the Buffalo Bills as a defensive backs coach in 1984, followed by similar roles with the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Jets.

In 1994, he was given the head coach job of the Jets. He later led the New England Patriots from 1997 to 1999.

Despite his opportunities, his early head coaching stints in the NFL yielded mixed results, leading him back to college football.

In 2001, he took the helm at the University of Southern California (USC), revitalizing the Trojans’ football program.

Under Pete Carroll’s management, USC achieved an extraordinary 97–19 record and secured seven consecutive Pac-10 titles.

His tenure with the University also saw them winning two national championships. His tenure produced numerous NFL-caliber players.

He is credited for producing top players, including three Heisman Trophy winners, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, and Reggie Bush.

His emphasis on a competitive culture and player development positioned USC as a dominant force in college football during the early 2000s.

He made a comeback to the NFL in 2010 and became the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Over 14 seasons, he led the team to 137 regular-season victories.

He claimed 10 playoff wins and the Seattle Seahawks’ first Super Bowl title in 2013. His tenure was marked by the creation of the “Legion of Boom,” a formidable defensive unit that contributed to the team’s success.

After stepping down from his role with the Seahawks in 2024, he was appointed as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders in January 2025.
