Jill Freeze

Jill Freeze is widely known as the wife of veteran college football coach Hugh Freeze, who most recently served as head coach of the Auburn Tigers before his dismissal in November 2025.

While Hugh has become a familiar name in college football for his time at Ole Miss, Liberty, and, most recently, Auburn, Jill has quietly built her own story as a teacher, mother, foundation leader, and a steady presence behind one of the SEC’s most talked-about coaches.

Jill Freeze Biography

Jill Freeze

She was born and raised in Louisville, Mississippi, where she attended high school. Jill Freeze went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Secondary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), later adding a Master of Secondary Education.

After college, Jill spent close to a decade teaching high school, including math classes, before stepping back from full-time teaching to support Hugh’s coaching career and raise their family. Today, she focuses much of her time on outreach to other coaches’ wives and on the family’s charitable work.

On social media, she’s known for sharing Bible verses and messages of encouragement.

It was at USM that Jill first met Hugh Freeze. Both were undergraduate math majors at the time, though by Jill’s own account, it was not love at first sight. The two grew close gradually as students before their relationship eventually turned romantic.

Career

Jill Career

Before Hugh’s coaching career fully took off, Jill worked as a high school teacher for close to ten years, teaching a range of subjects, including math. Education was always close to her heart, given her academic background, and teaching gave the family stability during the early years of their marriage.

That stability was tested when Hugh’s coaching journey took the family from job to job. At one point, after Hugh accepted a position at Lambuth University, the move came with a significant pay cut.

Jill, who had been a stay-at-home mom up to that point, returned to the classroom as a math teacher so the family could make ends meet. All three of their daughters were enrolled in the same Christian school during this period.

Jill has spoken about this chapter of her life with humility, describing the family’s small rental home, which they jokingly called “the palace,” complete with shag carpet, mismatched paint colors, and an old stove with push buttons.

Despite the modest circumstances, she has said she never complained, choosing instead to focus on building a home for her family wherever they landed.

For Hugh Freeze, his coaching career has taken him through a long list of programs, and Jill has been by his side for nearly all of it.

After starting out as a high school coach in Tennessee, where he eventually worked at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis (the same school featured in the movie The Blind Side, based on the story of NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher, whom Hugh coached), Hugh moved into the college ranks. His head coaching stops have included:

  • Lambuth University (2008 – 2009)
  • Arkansas State University (2011)
  • Ole Miss (2012 – 2016)
  • Liberty University from (2019 – 2022)
  • Auburn University from (2023 – 2025)

At Arkansas State, the family relocated so quickly that Jill had to enroll their three daughters, Ragan, Jordan, and Madison, in school before they technically had a permanent address, which meant the girls were briefly classified as homeless while Jill scrambled to find a rental home in the right school district.

It is a story Jill has shared as an example of how chaotic and how normal life as a coach’s family can be.

At Ole Miss, Hugh’s tenure included real success on the field, including a top 10 national finish in 2015, but also off field controversy that ultimately led to his resignation in 2017.

Hugh later admitted publicly that he had not honored Jill the way he should have during that period, a comment widely understood to reference personal failings that came to light around his departure from Ole Miss.

Rather than the marriage falling apart, Jill has described choosing to focus on healing rather than hurt, and the couple worked through that difficult chapter together.

Jill has called Hugh “the godliest man I have ever known” when reflecting on how their faith carried them through. After Ole Miss, Hugh rebuilt his career at Liberty University, posting a 34-15 record over four seasons from 2019 to 2022 and helping develop quarterback Malik Willis into one of the top players in the country.

Hugh Freeze’s Time at Auburn and 2025 Firing In November 2022, Hugh was hired as Auburn’s head coach, bringing Jill and the family to Auburn, Alabama. His tenure there, however, did not go the way Auburn fans hoped.

Over three seasons, the Tigers posted a combined 15-19 overall record (6-16 in SEC play), missing bowl games in 2024 and struggling through a 4-5 start in 2025.

On November 2, 2025, Auburn fired Hugh Freeze following a 10-3 home loss to Kentucky, ending his nearly three-year run with the program. Defensive coordinator D.J.

Durkin took over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Hugh’s overall career coaching record across all his stops stands at 91-66. The firing came during a personally difficult stretch for the family as well.

In February 2025, Hugh announced he had been diagnosed with an early stage of prostate cancer. He was expected to make a full recovery and continued his coaching duties throughout treatment.

Jill and Hugh’s relationship began on the USM campus, where their shared interest in mathematics gave them an unexpected starting point. Over time, their college friendship developed into something more serious.

On July 25, 1992, the couple married at a Baptist church in Independence, Mississippi. After the wedding, they honeymooned in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, before beginning what would become a life defined by Hugh’s coaching career and the constant moves that came with it.

One story that has stuck with the family over the years took place early in Hugh’s career, before he had landed a major coaching job. Standing in an empty stadium with Jill, Hugh confidently told her, “I will be a head coach in the SEC one day.”

At the time, he had no real track record to point to, but Jill believed him anyway, a belief that would be tested many times over the following decades. Jill and Hugh have three daughters, Ragan, Jordan, and Madison, all of whom grew up immersed in the world of college football thanks to their father’s career.

Ragan Freeze, the eldest, is married and they welcomed a daughter, Hudson Blair Reynolds, in July of 2024.

Ragan has remained closely tied to Auburn, often sharing moments from the football program on social media, including videos of her daughter at the Auburn practice facility.

Jordan Freeze McManus, the middle daughter, graduated from Liberty University and is married to Mark McManus. The couple has a daughter named Danni Jane McManus. Jordan has stayed close to Auburn as well, building a life there as a proud alum of the program her father once coached.

Madison Freeze, the youngest, is known within the family for her spirited personality, with Hugh affectionately saying she is full of “the fire.”

She has kept a relatively private life but has occasionally shared glimpses of her world on social media, including celebrations with friends and heartfelt birthday messages with her father.

Hugh has described Madison as someone who makes him “smile and laugh through the years more than anyone.” All three daughters were regularly seen supporting their father from the stands during Auburn home games, including emotional celebrations after hard fought wins during a difficult 2025 season.

Faith has remained a constant thread throughout Jill Freeze’s life. She is known for sharing Bible verses and messages of encouragement on social media, and she has spoken about the importance of prayer in her relationship with her daughters, describing how the family discusses prayer requests with one another.

In 2014, Hugh established the Freeze Foundation, a charitable organization aimed at expressing God’s love by improving the lives of children and orphans around the world.

Jill played an integral role in the foundation’s work for years. The foundation has since ceased operations following the controversy connected to Hugh’s departure from Ole Miss.

Beyond the foundation, Jill has also focused on supporting other coaches’ wives, an informal but meaningful role within the college football community, where the demands of the job (constant travel, public scrutiny, and frequent relocations) can be especially difficult on families.

Jill Freeze Net Worth

Jill Freeze Net Worth

There is no publicly confirmed individual net worth figure for Jill Freeze. Her husband, Hugh Freeze, however, has built significant wealth over his coaching career, with estimates placing his net worth at around $12 million.

This figure reflects decades of salaries from major Division I programs, including Ole Miss, Liberty, and Auburn, where his buyout following the 2025 firing was reported at just over $15 million.

After more than 30 years of marriage, Jill Freeze’s story is closely tied to her husband’s coaching journey, but it is also distinctly her own.

From teaching math in small Mississippi towns to raising three daughters across multiple states, supporting a foundation built on faith, and standing by Hugh through both success and scandal, Jill has remained a steady presence through every chapter, including the most recent one, as Hugh’s time at Auburn came to an end in November 2025.
