Barcelona stumbled to a shock 4-2 defeat to Girona in LaLiga matchday 34 clash to finally bow out of the LaLiga title race, MySportDab reports.
The Xavi-led side went into the game 13 points adrift of Real Madrid, who aced their early kickoff with a 3-0 victory over Cadiz.
The defending champions needed nothing less from victory against Girona to stay in the race for the elite club trophy in Spain or risked being capitulated in the title race if they fell to Girona.
It was a cracker as the two sides locked horns. Girona have been the giant killers and surprise team this season, mercilessly smiting the big elephants in their push for a first Champions League football which they have successfully qualified.
Barcelona went into the lead in the game through Christensen just three minutes into action but Girona did not allow a minute passed before restoring parity.
Dovbyk found the back of the net for the hosts in the 4th minute, just a few seconds after Christensen’s goal, to peg back the LaLiga giants to a 1-1 draw.
The first half nearly ended on a draw before Robert Lewandowski scored from the spot in the 45+1st minute to restore Barcelona’s lead before the break.
The second half was a shocker. Girona bundled the game perfectly in the second 45, leaving Barcelona at a loss and shambles.
The hosts scored in a space of two minutes after the hour mark to turn the game in a flash. Portu nailed home the equaliser first in the 65th minute before Gutierrez completed the comeback two minutes after Portu’s equaliser.
Suddenly losing their lead and trailing 3-2, Barcelona ramped up their attempt to restore parity and possibly restore the lead but were dealt a final blow in the 74th minute.
Portu scored again to bag his brace and sealed a dramatic 4-2 victory for the hosts.
The loss saw Real Madrid crowned champions due to their 13-point gap on top of the table with four games left to wrap up the season.
