Williams became Grambling State University’s head football coach in 1998, taking over for his old mentor Eddie Robinson. In addition to his tenure from 2011–2013, he continued in the role until 2003.

He also worked with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their executive in charge of personnel matters.

In its first year, the Doug Williams Foundation—which was founded by Williams in 1988—granted over $100,000 in college scholarships.

In 2015, he was inducted into the Ring of Honor by both the Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
